Tom’s Hardware confirmed it: the 9900X3D is 7.3% slower than the 9950X3D in gaming but costs 17% less. That might sound okay until you realize the 9800X3D beats it in pure gaming for $120 less. This chip is in an awkward spot in AMD’s lineup.

Where it earns its price: moderate content creation alongside gaming. Twelve cores give it real versatility the 9800X3D can’t match. It’s also 20% faster than the older 7900X3D.

During gaming tests it averaged just 65W power draw. That’s seriously efficient for the frame rates it produces. The 96 MB cache makes it outperform more expensive non-X3D chips in cache-heavy games, including beating the Ryzen 7 9700X in those specific scenarios.

Outside gaming though? It struggles. It only boosts to 4.7 GHz. Six cores hit a hard multi-threaded ceiling fast. The Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus is more than twice as fast in multi-core work. If you only game, this chip is a steal. If you do anything else demanding, you’ll hit walls quickly.

With iBOT running, it pulled 10% ahead of the Ryzen 5 9600X in Cyberpunk 2077 and 12% ahead in Doom: The Dark Ages. Intel’s BOT delivers an average 15% gaming improvement across 38 supported titles. TechSpot measured it 85% faster than the Ryzen 5 9600X in Cinebench 2026 multi-core.

Honest caveat: for pure gaming, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is still the better pick because of 3D V-Cache. But for a budget builder who streams, clips gaming footage, or runs apps alongside games, nothing at $199 comes close to what this chip offers.
